Ten Days of Chicken

"If you could only eat one type of food for the rest of your life, what would it be?"

This question always amused me. Am I allowed to say pizza? Because if so, then a pizza can be customized to pretty much anything. Basically, pizza is just a flat bread with leftovers, and the variations are endless. Am I allowed to say eggs in any form? If so, then I could boil them, scrambled eggs, fried eggs, I could add milk, flour to make pancakes, I could add ham and onion to make a great omelet, and so on.
What I'm asking is this: Am I allowed to do variations, add other ingredients? If so, then my answer is chicken.

Would I grow tired of chicken? Probably. But chicken doesn't taste a whole lot, and it's mainly the other ingredients that leave the taste. To find out, I gave my self a challenge. I would eat chicken for ten straight days, but it would have to be different every day.

Breakfast, lunch and brunch in New York

It should come as no surprise that there are many places to get good food in New York. But it's also no secret that many tourists tend to seek the familiar and safe option. In some cases, I even suspect it's tempting to eat cheap when on holidays. I can understand this, not everyone prioritizes food when they're on trips. And sure enough, you won't have to look long or far for the $1 burger meal in NYC. But it's really nothing to write home about. Literally.

We did it a bit differently. Read on for the first of three articles with details on where to eat in New York City. This first one is about breakfast, lunch and brunch. Enjoy!

How to make a Club Sandwich

It's a remarkable thing, how easy it is to impress people. Just give them what they want. People want a sandwich with chicken and bacon. Why not make just that? Everyone loves a good club sandwich, specially if it's well made, with home-made bread and other quality ingredients. While we're at it, why not make extra bacon on the side as well?

A club sandwich can disappoint. I mean, I could use bad chicken, I could switch out the tomatoes with eggplant. Or just use less/no bacon. But then I would do just that. Disappoint. I will not disappoint. I will make an awesome club sandwich, not just because I want to, but because it's in my power to do so.

So hop on in for my example of how to deliver what is promised, and Mattel's example of how to absolutely disappoint (Yup, this is another "Recipes and ranting").

Bacon tip

Just a little tip on this Tuesday. I've previously mentioned a way to get the bacon extra crisp is to cook it in the oven, as opposed to the frying pan. And that's cool, but it really takes less time to fry it. Still, the excess fat makes it less crisp than it should be. Instead of just going straight from the pan onto the serving plate, I let it rest for a few seconds on a newspaper. The paper absorbs the fat, and the bacon ends up super crisp.

Also this Tuesday: WTF?

Bacon/Guacamole Toast

And there came a day, unlike any other... When earth's mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat. On that day they...

Wait a second. What's this?

Let me try again. Let me try to focus on less important matters.

And there came a day, when you had just made guacamole, and had nothing to use it with. Sure, you could just eat it, alongside fried eggs or bread. Or you could use in the most obvious fashion, and have it as a side dish in a Mexican-inspired meal.

I assume you saw the guacamole I made earlier this week. I thought it was good enough to just eat without anything else, but I had made more than enough for a couple of meals.
I thought to myself, how do I combine guacamole and bacon in the most natural way? Well, I got the idea from another blogger, for once. Usually, I'm able to pull that simple, and obvious ideas out of my own hat, but as I stumbled upon the guacamole sandwich, I almost got embarrassed. Here I had made guacamole, and I had to look elsewhere for inspiration how to eat it.

Anyway, I'll not link this blog, because it was awful, cluttered with popups and adverts. Yes, I know I have an ad on my blog too, but that's mainly for getting the stats. I can assure you, I make absolutely nothing writing Toys and Bacon - other than the sweet feeling of pride there is in creating amazing stuff for the Internet. You're welcome.

And with that, here's the bacon/guacamole toast:

Enjoy!

Good things in life: Bacon toast

Most of the stuff I write about can be described as good things. But that's from my point of view.
I'm of course fully aware that there's something universally good about for instance Lego, bread or superheroes. While other things, like whiskey and bootleg toys - I know these are acquired tastes, not for everyone.

What's Inside a Burger? (plus a T&B100 Teaser)

In the past, I've believed that the pizza was the best all-round dinner. You could put what ever you want on it, and you could customize the same pizza for different tastes. I still believe this to be true, but naturally there are many meals that have this form of customizations. Anything from tacos to pancakes are versatile in the way that you can alter the content to your preferences without changing the main theme of the meal.

But enough with the philosophy, what follows are two burgers with different content.

JP's Leap Day Omelet

Happy Leap Day! Use the chance to do something you've never done before! A day like this only comes around every four years. So why not take some risks? It doesn't have to be something dangerous. It could very well just be a new recipe, using a few different ingredients, or maybe even removing an ingredient.

Today, my friend JP shows us how to work a "low-risk change" into his lunch, as he shares his recipe for egg white omelet.
It looks like a really tasty one, specially with the inclusion of vegetables and cheese filling. I'm a bit weirded out by the lack of egg yolks. I always  use the entire egg for my omelets, but I would be a hypocrite if I didn't like the idea of altering recipes. Specially on a day like this!

Composing a burger

In any other situation, I would be embarrassed to show pictures of such low quality, but the importance of the topic is far too important for me to not write about it. This is just one of those cases where no one can be silent, not a single person will show ambivalence, it affects literally everyone!

How do you compose the perfect hamburger?

Read on for low quality pictures, high quality burgers and choices that will echo through eternity and decisions that will affect this world as well as other realities.

6 Quick Tips and Tricks in the Kitchen

Worry not! I'm here to save the day once more. Well, at least in the same way I did when I recommended you to have sharpened knives in the kitchen. These are fairly obvious tips. But that doesn't make them bad.

Read on. You may learn something new.

Breakfast Pancake (and a Teaser!)

From early on, we were being taught that breakfast was the most important meal of the day. This is obviously not correct. It's important to get nutrition to re-start the body after being asleep, but you don't really need an entire meal for this. It all depends how hungry you are, but if you're like me, the hunger doesn't kick in until noon. I know the body needs something, so I usually just throw down an egg or a banana.
Weekends are different. I won't say I wake up at noon, but I usually sleep long enough to actually be hungry. Weekends are different because I also have time to make proper breakfast.

Read on for a very simple recipe for the Breakfast Pancake.. As well as a teaser for some toys!

Meat Week: Sausages

Sadly, there will be a few days with slightly shorter entries, as I'm in the middle of something that requires my attention. But you can expect both toys and bacon within the next week. Starting off the Meat Week is a really short one about sausages.
